about

Country Music Breaks My Heart is a song about two people coming together to commiserate on their heartbreak the only way country music fans know how- drinking, dancing, and getting lost in the music. Country music can be funny, relatable, and light hearted. It can also be incredibly sad and heart wrenching. This song was inspired by a particular Nashville country singer with an ache and longing in his voice that will leave you teary eyed, and how hearing sad music can provide catharsis to make you happier. This tension between carefree dancing and real world trauma is exemplified in the song with a lighthearted, catchy chorus mixed in with verses about alcoholism and failed relationships. The half time beat of the song is perfect for dancing, and paints a picture of two friends dancing their problems away to a jukebox in an old honky tonk. At the end of the song, they don’t solve their problems but they do find a way to deal with them together and ultimately make each other feel better.

lyrics

Verse
Tequila used to be so fun
When I was younger I was twenty-one
I could really throw em back then
Someone take me to back when
Now when I have more than two
I’m on the floor and I’m calling you
Bartender gave me no shit
Guess he could tell I was really going through it

Pre Chorus
Honky Tonk Angels circle me now
And are here to help me out

Chorus
I’ve been hurt, so have you
Here’s a quarter put it in the juke
And watch me fall apart
Country music breaks my heart

Verse
Gettin’ married is like gettin’ the gold
And she proposed to you in Mexico
Never told you bout her drinkin back then
Now you wish you could go way back when
She was drowning in your love
And started reaching for the harder stuff
Couldn’t bring her any farther
Chose the whiskey over holy water

Pre Chorus
Honky Tonk Angels circle her now
And are here to help you out

Chorus
I’ve been hurt, so have you
Here’s a quarter put it in the juke
Box and I will try not to cry
When it plays “Don’t Close Your Eyes”
Don’t look away
It’s the right time and place
To just fall apart
Country music breaks my heart

Verse 3
Buddy if you can count to three
I think you're qualified to dance with me
In the light of the neon
I see something we can both agree on

Chorus
I’ve been hurt, so have you
Here’s a quarter put it in the juke
Box and I will try not to cry
I’ve been hurt, so have you
Here’s a quarter put it in the juke
And watch me fall apart
Country music breaks my heart
Country music breaks my heart
Country music breaks my heart
